A Letter Written on Mar 10, 1965

Wednesday, 4:45 p.m., March 10

Hi, kids,

I am home for just a few minutes before going down to Union Library to do some more work on my oral report which I have to give Saturday. I hope to get a rough version done of it when I return home later, too. Can't plan to do it all at the last minute. My original plan for today was to go to the library right after I left school, but I didn't leave until 4, and I was famished - no lunch. In fact, I just realized I hadn't even gone to the john since I left home this a.m. Busy, busy, busy ... Just like my kids.

Lar, I think Daddy has mentioned all the important things in his letters to you. First, check on the U of R registrar to be sure they did send out your transcript. If it was handled the way they handled your loan application, it may well be on someone's desk! No doubt you've written Virginia and asked them to let you know again about the college transcript. Re your vacation - I don't see how we can get along with only one car when three drivers will be home, and we may all be working. We sent SE an application for a job as a census taker for Niskayuna for that first week. She may not get the job or may decide she can't do it even if she gets it because she has so much school work to do, but if she does get it, she'll need a car. And your parents have to get to work, too -- you know how that is. Any chance of borrowing one of the Tupper's cars? The Ford does not operate too well; it has some noises and knocks that I don't like but which I haven't been able to get Daddy to do anything constructive about. But I would hesitate to have you take it on a long trip. And I must admit I am loathe to have you jaunt off in the Buick for the projected trip you're considering. We would really be strapped without the Buick for such a long time.

Daddy put your Phi Ep composite on your dresser. He wanted to put it on the fireplace mantle, but I didn't think that was necessary. What's the name of your big brother - Mick?????

I've been trying to figure exactly what prompted your phone call last Sunday except that maybe you realized I was hoping you both would call, in spite of the ultimatum. You really shouldn't call unless it's urgent, Lar. Was the "urgency" the car for the South or the transcript or the Board scores?

Grandma enjoyed her letter from you, Larry, but you really threw me in, telling her I was probably reading her your letters, etc. WHAT LETTERS? I think we've had three in about seven weeks, but then you did come home, and that counts, I suppose. We felt relieved for you that your hourlies were over and that you were feeling so relaxed. What a great feeling! And I think the B on the history was a fine grade. Hope you did as well on the others. The CT's which you said you mailed haven't come yet. Oh, wait, they are in the materials which came in the suitcases. I haven't had a chance to look at them yet. I will send this last letter from you to SE so she will be up to date on your possibilities for next year, even though you are no longer considered the GLC. I think that living on campus is the sensible and most convenient arrangement. What's the point of being there if you have to maneuver to get to campus for school, meals, library, etc. Foolish. We're glad you saw the Feinbergs and hope you get to see Isabelle soon, too. I must call Margie this week. Maybe she'd like to come over for dinner.

Our Seder plans are somewhat changed. Brenda's Easter Vacation is the week before Easter, not the week after as mine is, so she and Arthur have to be back in Chicago Easter Sunday. They have been planning to drive here, which means they would have to start back Saturday, in order to break up the trip a little and not be too exhausted when they get back. If they are driving, we will have Seder late Friday evening - in Amsterdam - since Uncle Raymond will have to leave the store early (Good Friday), to be home no later than Seder at 8 o'clock. This is the compromise situation right now. I am sorry that Aunt Rosella has to have all the extra work when she will have so many people living there, too, but she doesn't see any other way to work it. I'll help by making some of the Passover things here. Probably Arthur and Brenda will arrive in Amsterdam the 14th of April - Wednesday - spending the first part of the week in NYC with the pink-mink Kahns and S,R, and MA.

Aunt Ruth called last night and invited us for Fridayn night Seder, but I had to refuse, under these new circumstances. I'm assuming you are both still planning to be home that week-end. I'm sure SE is, because I'm going to go back with her. Did you know I was going to stay overnight Sunday at the CI, Lar, and go to classes on Monday - sort of a Mother's week-end. Linda isn't coming home; she's having Seder at her friend's house on Council Rock Ave.

Sioux Sue, your Monday's-Tuesday's letter came today, and of course we are (Daddy's home now) delighted that you enjoyed your week-end so much. Larry Ross is certainly a nice-looking boy. I hope you spent enought [sic] time studying for your BB's and didn't sacrifice precious minutes writing to us. Of course we wish you luck on them - what else? Think clearly now.

Your schedule looks absolutely back-breaking! When you start golf, won't you have to switch your Blue Key hours? That 9:10 hour is really something, isn't it? Six days a week!

I'm glad you decided to buy the shoes for the gown. I'm sure they made all the difference between the complete ensemble and the perfect effect and one which was not quite so perfect. I was worrying the whole week-end about the weather at Yale, especially Friday night. We understood that it was raining in that area. How did you get around from hotel to dinner to dance if it was raining? Did you have the white dress cleaned? How did it come out? You don't have to answer all these by mail - you can tell us when you get home for vacation.

Mrs. Coffey called last week and I picked up your things Friday after my hair appointment - $2.00 for the two items. She is literally an angel! She still has your slacks - my fault. I keep forgetting to look for the material. Maybe this Saturday afternoon I'll be able to.

We have to go to Temple Friday; I'm supposed to help with the Oneg Shabbat. Dave Ben Daniel has written an original service which is going to be used; I don't know any details. Bobby is coming in from Skidmore in honor of the occasion. She has her contract from Si Brief for this summer at about double what she got last summer. She'll be a sernior counselor and assistant drama specialist. She's just thrilled. She's hoping her three- week course will work out, but she has been told you need a B average to be accepted for it and she doesn't have a B average right now. However, if she has to choose between camp and the course, she'll take camp and make up the course next summer. It will create some technicality about graduation or certification, but she doesn't seem to be concerned. We have no plans for this Saturday night since we've decided not to go to the Starlight Ball. We have tentative plans to spend the evening with the Lobels but they are going to Newburgh. Next Wednesday, the 17th, is Ladies Night at Niskayuna K, so I'll be going out there with Daddy. We're going to the Credit Union dinner next Saturday night; I'll have something for you both if you're going to be home. Sunday night is chicken and shrimp at the club, if you're interested. June has asked us to save March 27. Pearl and Sol will be in from Kinston, No. Car., and she wants us to go out with them. And that's most of March.

Well, I'm on my way to Union. Daddy is all set to leave for K.

Love and kisses,
Mommy [Eleanor F. Friedman]
