February 17, 1965Hi, kids,
Just a quickie to say "hello." Daddy is at Kiwanis. Poppa and I had a light supper, and now he's watching Huntley-Brinkley. He is looking forward to Raymond's return tomorrow night and his own return to the routine he most enjoys - going to the store! Today his only excitement was the trash collection and the dogs bothering each other.
The phone bill came today, and Daddy has said, "No more long distance calls." The TOLL CHARGE was $31.82! And that doesn't include last Sunday's call to MHC. Sioux Sue, your New York call was $6.40, plus tax. I told you you were talking too long. Anyway, since September, calls and tax from Larry come to $45.82, and those involving SE, $20.58. So no more. Daddy says you're to write, and there won't be any need of our calling you to find out how you are. Therefore, I am enclosing a post card to each of you - - please use it. Call only in the event of a serious, serious problem which needs our mature judgment - ahem. Otherwise, write!
Sioux Sue, did you ever get the loafers? The bill came today, but you never did mention that the shoes had arrived - - you only asked me to check on them, which I did.
Just spoke to Ernie - Jeff is happy about the Buffalo acceptance. He had a most marvelous time on the Ti trip to Montreal. Actually there was a large group of kids there, some from Conn. and from Mass. The group going up from here included kids from Glens Falls, Albany, and Schdy. Bobby enjoyed it, too, although she said the kids couldn't quite make her out - was she "one of them" or a chaperone? But all in all, it was quite an exhilerating [sic] experience, and Jeff was elated over it.
Grandma is having her floors scraped now; the painting is just about finished. Her place should look very nice. I'm going to help her select some new rugs for the two front rooms - probably go with her this Saturday afternoon. And then she'll need drapes, and she'll have a nice looking place. She sounds very well now, but Max is still not feeling up to par.
Daddy and I watched part of "The Hollow Crown" on Ch. 10 last night, but we thought it was very dull, although the NY Times gave it a fine review today. We switched to the Telephone Hour and enjoyed Ray Bolger. I am eager to see the review on Baker Street which opened last night. I wanted to send ahead for tickets. I wonder if it was as good as Dolly. I watched the Discotheque segments on TW3 last night; Killer Joe was on. See the clipping I sent you, SE. [no longer with the letter] They did a skit on the Bostela. Remember you learned about it first from me.
I gave Daddy a Valentine's Day present - Maurice Eisendrath's new book Can Faith Survive? I'd like to read it, too.
Keep well. Drop us a card telling us what's your status. Save the long news for when we see you.
Love and kisses,
Mommy [Eleanor F. Friedman]
