First of all thank you so much for the money. You are always thinking on everything, what can be the best for your friends! I mean to send 1 dollar notes. We are most sorry to hear, that something has been broken. As the[y] are assured for the whole sum, the reparations must be paid, only one must tell the assurance at once. About the largness, you can put the panspaper [sic] on which the century of every piece was written on the glasses. It was a true copie from every piece. It is such a pity it would be broken, dear Miss Turner. It has never happened [...] all this years. [sic]
I am so happy to be able to tell you, that by my very daughter the sugar has gone down quite a lot, so that we hope once she will be free from it. She has still the high Insulin and diet, but one is thankful for ever the smal[l]est bit of recovering. Prof. Spemann told my daughter they have met you. They were very pleased with their American trip.
My husband is working hard on the second part and I hope it will be ready next summer. What an interesting book it must be about Egyptian Papyrus. I hope, they will also come to Europe, so that I can see it once.
To morrow my husband and I are invited to the Initiation of the new Kliniks. Only a part of them are ready, because they have no more money. I wish you would hear the footage of the most celebrated Prof. to morrow. Yesterday evening I heard in Radio the wonderful Concert from New York with Toscanini as dirigent. [German for "conductor"] It was so clear, just as if I had been in the hall.
12 Dec. Oh, how the time is running! Such a lot of things have happened, since I begun [sic] your letter. I have lost several good dear friends and that makes one sad. Also our dear old true Lene, who staid 55 years in our family died in my arms and we buried her in our family grave. With her I lost something very precious[.]
The Initiation of the Kliniks was very solemn. A lot of Ministers and Rectors of several Universities were there Prof. Thannhauser / the Dr of my daughter was holding an wonderful speech in his big new Harsaal. Afterwards he showed all the Klinik till it was time for lunch in Zabringerhof for all the Invited. In the evening they gave "Rosenkavalier" by Strauss in the Theater. I wish you would have seen my husband in frack. [?] It is a seldom one, you can well understand!
Have you read the wonderful book by Axel Munthe "The story of San Michele"? It is written in English. He is the Dr. of the dead Queen of Sweden and is himself a Swede. His house is that lovely San Mt. on Capri, one of the beautifullest spots in the world. I am sure it will interest you very much. It is most interesting from begin to the end.
Prof. Speman[n] came to us to tell that he had met you and he wish you to visit him, when you come again to Freiburg.
The times are very bad and one never knows, what will come, but as I do'nt think on coming days I am thankful for the to day. Now Xmas is very near. We will be [sic] a great party and I wish very very much you my dear Miss Turner would also be standing by our great lovely xmas tree [...] in my salon. I always love to have the most beautiful "julgran" with many lights. Our children are coming also Mitzi and her husband Prof Külm and the parents and sisters of my son in law Prof Fisdur and the young english boy and a young german girl, who is just also staying here so you see the house is full. That young girl is going to Russia after new year for studying. It is keen for 22 years!
How is the epidemi? [sic] I am sorry for all the poor poor children! If anybody only could find something against that illness.
Now dear friend I wish you a good Merry Xmas and a very good new Year during which your heartiest wishes are going to be realised - and also I have a very egoistic wish - that the new year will bring you again to your German home.
