A Letter Written on Feb 21, 1911

25 Safford Hall, South Hadley, Mass.
Feb. 21, 1911.

Dear Mother,

The Glee Club concert is on & we are enjoying or rather about to enjoy a free sit up in consequence. There is to be a reception after it. M. & I have just taken bottles for tomorrow eve. is Prom. & we will have to go down & look on at that. They only let you stay 20 min. a class. but tomorrow I must study. I haven't done a thing to night but play. After 3 classes, gym. & lab. I am not dying to study particularly when I don't really have too. [sic]

This has been a glorious day. After Lab. M. Dorothy, May Phipps ( a soph.) & I went to walk. May & M. behaved themselves but Dorothy & I acted like perfect kids much to the disgust of the others. They thought we should be proper with so many Prom. men around.

M. Dorothy, Virginia Bennette & I are planning to go on a sleigh ride tomorrow - get a sleigh for an hour provided the jrs. & their men don't capture all the teams. We have to have a jr. or sen. as chaperone so Virginia is going to do the art.

Oh before I forget it the last Mt. Holyoke announced that [...] had a son born Sept. 7, 1911.

Also to day at gym. they played that thing about [daydreams?] from "Spring Maid" for us to dance by. In spite of the fact that only 5 girls in this hall are going to prom. there has been considerable excitement. To begin with last week Ruby Murray's man developed pink eye. To be sure he promised to send. a substitute & as I don't think she knew the man I don't think it would have much mattered. However he recovered.

Then Florence Jones's dress didn't arrive until to day. That caused consternation & when it did come this P.M. Reba Eaton flew into the student parlor occupied by Florence, another girl & their men & announced the fact before them all.

However the most exciting was to night. There was a dinner in Porter for jrs. & men. Mildred Wentworth's man was coming to day so she was going to that and had a gown on purpose for that & concert to night. She was a perfect picture in it. The dress was yellow, made simple to the waist embroidied [sic] in violets. She had a violet scarf with gold dotts [sic] & yellow stones & a big bunch of violets. Then she had a black velvet around her neck & another as billet & black slippers. She always makes me think of Queen Louise - tall with beautiful wavy gold brown hair & most aristocratic looking. Well the whole hall had a great time admiring her dress - fresh. in particular. It got to be dinner time & no man came. Then things got exciting. He comes from New Hampshire or thereabouts. She waited & waited & at last in the middle of dinner he appeared - seems there had been a wreck on the train.

I thought Dad wrote you would go home Mon. but guess I misunderstood. It's a shame it had to snow. Hope to day was a[s] good in Andover as here. Am glad you enjoyed the meeting.

It's after ten & I am gletting sleepy so good night & very very much love,
Marjorie.
