My room. Thursday afternoonMy dear Mother
I told you I could not write to you until next Wednesday, but I guess I'll try, and eke out a little time, just for you, to tell you I am safely landed at South Hadley, bag, and baggage. I met Jane Miles at Mr. Franklin's, had her company all the way. You must not expect but a few lines from me this time, oh! yes, I remember you told me you would be satisfied with that. Robert came with us as far as Pittsfield was very kind and obliging indeed. My ride here cost me $3.75 exactly, the trimming on my hat with the cap $1.19 which makes $4.94 and I have left $4.31 in the whole $9.25 just the sum with which I started from home. I have not been quite as unfortunate as Mary Comstock, who lost her purse with $9.00 on the way. Poor girl I know just how to pity her. I suppose you would like to know about my roommate, &c. Well I am finely provided for, I am going to room with Ellen and Mary until Charlotte comes, and have Em to sleep with me too. Tell pa he need not try to read this, for I am really afraid it would bother his eyes. I have not been homesick at all yet, only a little chilly occasionally. There I can write no more now so Good bye All the love I possess I send to you all.
