My dear Susie,
Your letter made a bright bit of a place on my Thanksgiving but I was surprised to discover on reading your letter that all you had heard from me was thro' the Round Robin.
You Surely had reason for thinking me lost and absorbed and thoughtless with many other adjectives but I have written to you Susie. Several weeks ago it was sent I think and I wonder why you haven't it.
The history of my two months can be put into four letters work and more work. I must be a slow person as well as a poor planner but my days usually go something like this. An attempt to get up at half past six usually nearer seven, breakfast from 7.30 to eight oclock. About ten minutes walk to school where I am busy till one lunch, a a walk (at least half an hour long) practice of half an hour (vocal) and correcting work and planning work take up my time till dinner at 6.15. The evenings are filled usually with school work too. I am not sitting up later than ten as a rule, I find myself sleeping over in the morning if I do.
I am very sorry you get so little sleep. It must be very trying. At Madame Courtney's where I stayed five weeks I did not get to bed as early but Miss Courtney would often come in about ten and rehearsals were often late but I was getting able to go to sleep nevertheless.
It was too far from the school and Miss Hicks said I must be nearer so I am now in a boarding place at 139 East 57th St. the majority of the boarders are Catholics and I do not like them very well.
I kept putting off till Thanksgiving hunting up another place for they are very difficult things to find but here it is Sunday & I haven't done a thing about it.
Its [sic] an easy matter for time to slip by and nothing be done, and that's just my predicament, at present.
You are fortunate indeed in being able to have your sister with you for a week. School closes the 22nd and begins the 3rd. I haven't much more than a week either.
Yes, I saw five 98 girls at the Mt. Holyoke Alumnae meeting a week ago yesterday. Margaret Peck, Jessie Stebbins, Mabel Eaton, Grisell & Emma.
One Sunday afternoon I went to where Grisell rooms and had a nice visit with her. She wanted to know what you were up to and wished she could see you.
Alice Walker came in yesterday & went with me to a lecture and took lunch with me - then I went down town, and went about with her shopping. She inquired for you.
I expect when I go home I'll be teased by Grace because I said so much about a little boy of 11 yrs. Willie Courtney. When I was training in New Britain I did the same about another boy. But I know you would like them too.
Willie I've helped quite a bit with his Arithmetic and Latin. I was over there last night till after nine. He doesn't know how to study, I must admit but he is at times especially very attractive.
The little people in my school are very nice also but I've to mend my ways and be less severe and a little more beaming in school.
These three weeks you can think of me as keeping on a broad grin most of the time.
I am very sorry Mansfield doesn't agree with you.
How fortunate that Elizabeth can spend Thanksgiving at College! Jessie Stebbins was to do the same.
I think the Robin must be getting very infirm and decrepit or else his flying powers would be in better condition. I'm eagerly watching for his alighting here.
I planned so beautifully to get my letter writing caught up but alas, I have only written six letters besides this and I must write four more at least.
Oh I had a letter from Nan yesterday. She is enjoying her work very much from 1.30-5.00 in the afternoon are her hours and she has her family with her. You knew she was at the Hillhouse High School New Haven?
I am going to squeeze in a minute just as soon as I possibly can to run down and see Mabel Eaton at her office 33 E. 17 but the times when I go down town are so arranged that I've no time for going about.
I heard Dr. Van Dyke preach last Sunday a magnificent but very practical sermon on faith & faithfulness. To day a plea for the Presbyterian board of Home Missions by Dr. Thompson. I usually go to a second service in the afternoon and then do not go out in the evening as it makes it late. Here is a longer account of myself than will interest you I fear But please write again and give a gentle hint to Elizabeth too as well as a great, great deal of love to you both from
