Tougaloo Univ.
Tougaloo Miss.
Sep. 26 '04.Dear Harvey,
Here I am at Tougaloo and it is hot! Conn. has not felt such heat all summer; this afternoon it is 90° in the shade. I think it is warmer here than at Orange Park, and there is little rain.
I left Union and the babies two weeks ago Wednesday, going to Springfield Ill. on the Penn. and C.H. & D. and Wabash roads thro Philadelphia, Pittsburgh Indianapolis and Decatur. I reached Springfield Friday evening and stayed there till Wednesday morning when Uncle George, Clara and I set out for St. Louis. I was there two days and was completely done up at the end of that time. Of course the whole thing was vast compared with Buffalo, but the general effect was not so good.
The Japanese exhibits were more extensive than those of any other foreign country and were extremely interesting. The Gov't. building we found very attractive and we did it quite thoroughly. Heard Guilmant play the big organ.
I left St. L. Friday night at 11.15 on the Ill. Central, and reached Tougaloo at 3.10 Saturday afternoon, after the most uncomfortable ride I ever had.
I think I shall like Tougaloo, and I hope it will like me. There are about twenty five teachers, most of them are here already, a fine set of people.
I am in Berkshire, a cottage fitted up for model housekeeping, there are three other teachers here. School begins Wed. I have 7th grade. The school has a large farm, cows, horses, mules chickens, turkeys etc. Write soon.
Lovingly
Susie
