Tougaloo, Miss.
May 21, 1906Dear family,
Your letter came this noon. I do not see how I can get to Putnam by Tuesday afternoon, for I cannot get to Middle Haddam until Monday night anyway, and I think I shall take a day in Hartford from there, which will probably have to be the 31st go to Putnam Friday, and you may meet me at West Woodstock on Saturday. I will get a belt and a hat and something that will make a funny noise, all the swellest that can be bought in Hartford, I do not think I can stand any N.Y. shopping this trip. Talk about 82° being hot! When the mercury hovers about the 90° mark in our rooms at 10 o'clock at night, you may then speak of the slight warmth.
Everybody is in a grand rush, prize speaking tonight etc, final rehearsals etc - I had my final ones before breakfast (6 A.M. think of my doing that!) because after the heat of the day begins I just don't care whether school keeps or not. Commencement is going to be extra fine this year, and many alumni are back. Miss Gross and I have the honor of presiding at the alumni tables.
See you a week from Sat. Potatoes planted? We are eating new ones -
With love.
S.M.L.
