A Letter from Fanny Bixler

Dear Carrie:-

Your card and letter were received and enjoyed. It was good of you to write them.

After dinner Angie Heartz and I took cushions, books, and writing materials up on Prospect. That is where I am as I write this letter.

Examinations began yesterday. I had French the first afternoon. Bible and Astronomy come this week on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.

But both Mr. Nourse and Miss Young gave us suggestive questions for review. So we know that we shall be asked some of those questions. That makes it easier. Bible will be written and Astronomy oral. Imagine Angie and I having to be quizzed for two hours! In "Zoo" we have a paper. I have worked hours on mine and expect to put hours more on it, but hope it will be all finished by Saturday, June 15th. It is largely drawings of different embryonic organs and so on and then labelling those drawings. In Botany we had a final examination which came during our last recitation. So that was out of the way before "exam" week began. I took a one hour course in Botany and a "quiz" came last Thursday as a perfect surprise to us. When we went in there were twenty-eight flowers in water, all in a row. We were to give the family name and common name of each. Oh! dear! I felt like giving up. But I did some guessing and handed in my paper. Afterwards Dr. Hooker came and we went over the flowers orally and I learned something I did not know before. Last Wednesday I worked almost all day. I mounted my pressed flowers and looked over my drawings and handed them in together with my list of wild flowers. I saw over fifty this spring. My number would have been larger but two Wednesdays when Dr. Hooker took the girls out on a Botany walk I could not go. One girl saw seventeen new ones on one walk. Last Friday evening the stars came out beautifully. Angie and I went over to the Observatory and reviewed our constellations and then Miss Young took one of us at a time and quizzed us. We pointed out the constellations, bright stars and so on.

We did not have May Day this year. You know we had two days at Washington's birthday and May 9th we had off for the Junior "Prom". So I suppose another day off for May Day would have been one too many. I did not have a man for the "Prom". But I went to the Class Play on Tuesday night, Glee Club Concert on Wednesday night, and Thursday night went over and looked down on the Juniors and their men dancing. It was a beautiful sight!

My room for next year is on third floor Mead. My number was 125. You see it was high. Several halls were closed before my turn came. I had thought that Mead was the last hall on the campus I wanted to go to. But there I shall be next year, if I am here. I have made arrangements for a second hand gown for next year and ordered a new cap. It seems scarcely possible that our class will soon be seniors.

I wish I could hear the duet you and your sister play. I know I should enjoy them. I am sorry you can not come back next year, but am glad you feel as well as you do. Did you know Pearl Kimball went home at the end of the first semester and expects to return next fall and live in Brigham. She is feeling better now, she says.

Angie sends her love to you, and so do I. Remember me to your sister and your aunt whom I met last fall.

Sincerely yours,
Fanny Bixler.
