A Letter from Myrtle Miller

My dear Miss Gowing,

I was delighted to have a letter from you, as I have often thought of you and wondered how you were getting along.

It must have seemed good to you to be at home for Christmas, though I missed you very much. So many of the patients went home that it seemed lonesome.

Yes, I read "Quo Vadis" a number of years ago. I cannot say that I cared very much for it. The pictures may be clearly drawn, but the whole thing was a little too realistic for me.

You must have enjoyed seeing "Ben.-Hur". I was invited to see it, but didn't go. I haven't been to the theatre since I came out here.

We had our graduating exercises the 24th of January. Then a week ago last Tuesday we had a class dinner at the "Thorndyke." It was a grand affair. There were about 30 of us, and we had the orchestra to play for us. Our invited guests were Misses Dolliver, McCrae and Chandler, and Doctors. Howard, Washburn, Badger and Manaham. [?] The last two were our instructors. We had 8 or 9 courses. At the end of the dinner, we had a class history[,] prophecy, and the usual toasts. Dr. Badger has been very sarcastic to us, and he got it hot and heavy. It [sic] the middle of the dinner, he was presented with a large pair of red mittens. That was because he had called us the "cold-fingered crowd" so often. He enjoyed the joke immensely. We had a delightful time.

I left the 3rd floor, the first of Jan. and have been on the 1st floor ever since. I like the head-nurse very much indeed. She has taught me a great deal[.] Just think, I haven't had any night-duty at all. I have been very fortunate. Toward the end of Jan. I prayed every night that I wouldn't have to go on night duty. I am such a bad girl that I wonder that the Lord hears me when I pray.

I have had some very nice patients and I have been very fond of some of them. I have two new now in one large room and they are great fun.

The 22nd the nurses all wore little American flags on their uniforms. They looked very pretty. Am glad you are gaining. I wouldn't worry about weighing 200, if I were you. I should be very glad to hear from you again.

Your[s] with love
Myrtle Miller.
