RFD No. 2Sunday morning
March 1, 1936Dearest darling Peegee Muddikins -
I left your last letter in my other pocketbook! Wish I had it here to reread and answer.
It has been a beautiful week end. The weather cleared Friday and it has been sunny or starry ever since. I got the 4:49 train after work Friday, took the subway to Washington Bridge & the bus to Maywood, where Grace lives. She wrote me complete directions and drew a map of the streets etc. It was about 7 p.m. when I arrived at Grace's. The rest were all there. Grace has a cute apartment - just about the size we would like. She has the knack of homemaking - has all kinds of cute gadgets around. She's going to be married in July - seems very happy about it. They are going to live with his parents and his father is very ill and somewhat demented. The house is way out - can't be reached even by telegraph. That must be love. If Grace can be happy in her work - unmarried mothers, etc., court cases & what not, I guess she can make out.
Grace has had a kitchen shower at work - got awfully cute, unusual gadgets - I made note of them - and we practically gave her a kitchen shower, but they didn't overlap. Alice gave her 6 dish clothes - nice ones - and her mother two hand-made green plaid dish towels. I gave her 6 common dish towels with colored borders, 2 red, 2 green & 2 blue. She liked them very much. Irene
Just heard Edward VIII broadcast his message to the Empire. It was very wonderfully nice. Did you hear it? Irene and I stayed home from church. She to work on homework. So glad I did now.
and her mother gave her Wearever aluminum, a nest of 3 pans with covers and one deep covered dish for jellies, roasts, etc. Grace was much delighted. Our dinner was delicious. For place cards she had cut out & pasted on a card the front & back views of each of us in caps & gowns. We had fruit juice cocktails, steak, mashed potato, beets, cucumber & lettuce salad, Dutch apple cake & whipped cream. We talked & talked - didn't get up from table until 10 o'clock. Washed dishes, talked awhile & saw
Martha'sGrace's gifts. I gave Martha her sheets & pillow cases. She was delighted with them, said she had everyday ones but none for best. And after carrying them way over and making her carry them way home (they are quite heavy) she isn't going until about May. Of course I'm glad. She wants me to come over again. Maybe you'll be here by then!Irene and I left about midnight for Ridgewood. We were both awfully tired. Irene and Alice may have us all over before May. Before Martha's marriage and my arrival they had never been together. Now they are getting busy - about time!
The Gleasons had a bad time with the snow. Both Mr. Gleason & Irene are dependent on cars, so they had to shovel out etc. Mr. Gleason is better now, but he was worse again for awhile. His business is booming again. Over 100 people working for him, & they run every night until 3:30.
I had a good lesson in car-buying yesterday. The weather was so nice that they had 2 Oldsmobile demonstrations yesterday, a six and an eight. We had a long ride in the six in the morning and one in the eight in the afternoon. So I will know all the questions to ask! Would you like an Olds?
Grace came over yesterday about 4 p.m. We played Monopoly - it's fun isn't it? - all evening Grace won once & Irene twice. Mr. G. & I not at all! I couldn't get the right property. Had a nice dinner. Grace left about midnight.
I slept so soundly until about 9 a.m. Had a shower this a.m. Mr. G. baked pancakes for breakfast. They tasted good. I am having dinner here. Grace comes after me about 4 and may drive me to the Bridge.
How are you? Tomorrow is the day you see Dr. Andrews. All the girls asked for you. Martha says you and she are in the same boat - uncertain about when you are going.
You did lots of business. Are we getting some of our bills paid? I got my suit cleaned here very nicely for 75¢. Do you think it pays to wash them?
Please thank everyone for being so nice to you.
I worked very hard first reading a gardening book last week. It isn't quite done. As usual, I'm too fussy, and they are much less exacting than Vail-Ballou. So I constantly have to think about what not to do, and it's awfully hard for me. Miss Ryan queries everything on her proofs, but she doesn't want me to. She said something about my going back to copy-reading-room incidentally, and I was glad to hear it. Miss Tankard doesn't have time to do thorough work on the ms. and that makes more queries, and then they don't want expense or to take time, so they tell me not to query. But I know Miss Ryan does, because Miss Tankard has changed things to please her on final proofs that even I wouldn't change. She's not logical or impersonal, and she's always worked in that one place. This must make you smile. I miss Mr. Hawkins, but I still like everything else. (The radio's playing "Three O'Clock in the Morning" - Oh dear! Will you ever forget it?) Considering I've been doing practically all advanced work since coming I've got to expect readjustment. I hadn't done much final reading before. But they find a fast but inaccurate worker lately, so I'm not going haywire. Besides, alot of it's talk, & I'm trying to take it as a matter of course & not let Miss R. see any discomfiture, à la your advice! Heaps of love & kisses. Am having a grand time this weekend. Be good to my precious Tillie!
