So. Hadley, Mass.
October 24th, 1900.My Dear Brother Elihu;-
Since you are, I remember, quite well acquainted with the firm of Cobb, Bates and Yerxa, would you find it too much trouble to convey my thanks to them for a splendid box that came to me on October 19th? I have waited since then till now to find out, if possible, who suggested the idea to them, but there seems to be no light on the subject as yet[.] Please tell them that I enjoyed especially the little cheese and preserved ginger and grapes and almonds - in fact everything was admired and eaten by the girls, tho' there is still some of the goodies left to be enjoyed in early morning hours or before returning at night. Never had I had such a box before and indeed, I was so supprised [sic] by it, that I was afraid it was ment [sic] for some other Loomis girl, tho' there is none other here.
Tomorrow comes our first examination in chemistry and I have got to study for it this afternoon if I can go to Springfield tonight to see Sam and hear Booker T. Washington. This evening a special car goes from the College to S. and brings us back after the services are over. The girls say that Sam was there yesterday and I do want to see him if I possibly can.
I am enjoying this term much more than the first of last year and I hope that my work will be better for it is much more to my taste th[an] what we had last.
I hope all the people in the Lane homestead are well and will have a happy winter.
Must not write longer now for Mary Fowle is waiting to quiz me on my chemistry[.]
With love and thank[s] for all
from Gussie -
S. A. Loomis.
