South Hadley, May 26. 1841.Mr. Bingham,
Sir,
We have received your second letter. We are under the necessity of refusing a part of our applicants. On this account, we should not do right to receive your youngest sister. We will reserve a place for the elder, if she wishes to come without the other. Perhaps she will wish to delay another year, or attend some other school. Please let us know as soon as may be, so that we may know whether to reserve a place.
Affectionately yours,
Mary Lyon.[According to familysearch.org, Waldo Bingham (born May 3, 1817 in Windham Conn) had three sisters: Nancy Maria (born Oct 17, 1821 in Windham Conn), Lucy (born Nov 17, 1824 in Windham Conn), and Sarah Jane (born Dec 26, 1826 in Windham Conn). I could not find any evidence that any of these sisters attended Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. The youngest one would have been 14 when this letter was written; according to the terms of admission in the 1841-42 catalog, students could not be admitted unless they were at least 16 years old.]
