Dr. Abby H. Turner,
Mt. Holyoke College,
South Hadley, Massachusetts.

Dear Dr. Turner:

The period of my teaching at Mt. Holyoke back in 1916-1918 was so brief that I doubt if you would remember my being there, but I remember you so very well, for I was always wishing I could find time to study with you. You may be interested to hear that we have been studying and discussing certain of your articles this semester in our graduate seminar.

It has been my hope for a long time to start working toward my Ph. D. degree in the fields of physiology and psychology. I wonder if you would be so good as to give me your advice as to the best universities in the country in which to pursue advanced studies in physiology. It seems to me that people interested in physical education must go very thoroughly into the fundamental sciences and gradually build up the knowledge which we need for an increasingly scientific program in physical education.

It is my impression that Mt. Holyoke does not give the Ph. D. degree. Is this true? I wish I might do some work with you. Any suggestions that you may give me in the matter will be very much appreciated.

With best wishes to the friends at Holyoke, I am

Sincerely yours,
Violet B. Marshall.
Director, Department of
Physical Education for Women.
