A Letter Written on Oct 9, 1938

[Some paragraph marks added for ease of reading.]

Rev. Dr. William M. Nesbit
230 Portsea Street
New Haven, Conn.

Sunday Night, Oct. 9, 1938.

My own dear little girl;--

Papa and I have been to Epworth League, had our supper, and I have washed my hair with the Drene for dry hair (very Satisfactory) and now Papa is working on his stamps and I thought I would write you what little news there is. The reason that I washed my hair is that I am going to Claymont with Papa. He was worried about my staying here alone and I had planned to take a room at the Naug. Y. but when Papa phoned last night to reserve a room, they told him it was only for men. That plan was out so I decided to go too, especially as we received a letter from Mrs. Hineman especially inviting me and saying she was so anxious to hear about you. She was always fond of you.

We leave Naug. on Tuesday Oct 11 at 10.34 and reach Claymont or rather Chester at 3.31 P.M. Papa sent a night letter asking them to meet us at Chester instead of Wilmington or Claymont. I think that Papa is homesick for old Marcus Hook -- just to get a whiff. But joking aside, if we take that express train we will not have to change at Philadelphia but will go direct from N.Y. to Chester. I will write you a full account of the wedding.

Mr. and Mrs. Noyes and Mr. Botoff came to see me and asked me if I would be the teacher of the John Wesley Bible Class and after going over the pros and cons, I decided to take it, (remembering what you said about my making a mistake in joining the old ladies class). I taught this morning for the first time and it was a delight. I have it as a forum class, very much like the class in Watertown. The teacher leads or rather opens a general discussion. This morning, the topic was, Now that we do not worship idols such as the golden calf of the Ancients, what idols do we worship? Everyone took part and it was a great pleasure. I sang two solos in the Anthem and that went O.K. I am feeling very well. Practically sugar-free and only have to go to Dr. Reade once in two or three weeks. Dr. Reade says that he is very much pleased with the way things are going. Papa took a Benedict Test last night and it was almost the same color after boiling as before (with a slight sediment). Some change!!

I am going over in the morning to Dr. D. He is curing up my tooth. The nerve had died -- that was what made the trouble. He sealed up the tooth with a rubber filling for the first on Friday and it has not given any trouble. I will be glad when I do not have to take so much time out travelling. After a trip to New Haven, the day is almost gone.

That certainly was a lovely letter to receive on our Wedding Day and it came just as we were about to sit down to our supper. Couldn't have come at a more auspicious time. My perfume and powder are "de-licious" I am going to take them with me on Tuesday as well as my little pin.

Have you heard the latest? The King and Queen of England are going to make Canada their home. They are coming to Canada soon to look things over. That will certainly keep them absolutely safe from bomb attacks. I certainly was glad you had milk to feed the kitten. Andrew is full of carrots. She ate 2 big saucer fulls. I am having trouble in making Brownie retrieve. I whip him and coak [sic] him and try all the tactics I know and his latest is to swat at the paper and knock it into the air just like a batter swatting a ball. One of the cutest things I have ever seen but it is not retrieving I will keep on trying indefinitely. Well Bess, I will go to bed now and post this in New Haven in the morning.

Au revoi,
Mama and Pop.

P.S. Papa is enjoying his book.
