Rev. Dr. William M. Nesbit
230 Portsea Street
New Haven, Conn.My own dear little girl:-
Papa went over to the market in Waterbury to get some pork liver for the cats - and I am taking the opportunity to write to you. - Papa came home and I have left this letter for a little while. Papa has a funeral this P.M. The Booth boy - 20 yrs. old. (6 ft 2 in tall) Got soaking wet - during that heavy rain storm - a week ago - and went to bed without taking any medicine[.] Pneumonia developed - took him to Waterbury Hospital Friday afternoon and he died Friday night. Mr. White had come to town for the Co-op. Dinner on Sat. so he heard of the death and came up to-day to assist at the funeral. Papa got home a little while ago - and is now doing up the enlargements of Aunt Emma. One for her and one for her mother. We purchased 2 nice frames at Kresge's for 15 ct. each - They look nice. I thought it was better to send them with a letter - telling the news - and saying how pleased you were with your Christmas present etc. Then in a few days - I will send your picture.
Yesterday was a busy day - but a very gratifying one. In the morning, I did not teach but Dr. W.'s class and mine - met in the church - to hear the former Probation Officer - speak about her work - and some special cases. She was splendid. Has been in the work for 14 yrs - but was just dumped out when the local Democrats came into office. It should not be a political job but it is.
Before I forget, will you send me the length of your silver chain? I imagine you and Sally take the same length. I will send that to you in a letter - so you will receive it in good time. I wrote to you some time ago - asking the length - but it is hard to remember everything. I have had plenty to remember in the last 2 weeks. Papa took 16 into the Church on Sunday morning - and will take more in next Sunday. I sang - A Dream of Paradise by Gray. I think you know it[.] It went over well. It is very difficult. In the Evening for a novelty, Papa and I ran a "true or false" Quiz for the Epworth League. That was a success - something different.
Did you see about the blizzard in Quebec. to-day. Worst storm in 25 yrs. Here, to-day, it is balmy and beautiful - Just like the Spring. Brownie does the cutest thing. At night he goes upstairs with us and when he gets to your door - he looks up at us as if to say "Good-night" and walks into your room - gets up on your bed and sleeps there until morning. He has been doing it for over a week.
Lowell Thomas is on the air - says "strange weather" - Blizzards in the Northern part of the State and Summer weather in New York. I suppose we will get a little of the snow later. Seems as if I could go on writing for ever but I will have to stop - and get the supper. Am enclosing a copy of the letter that we sent out this week - also the subscription card.
Lots and lots of love,
Mummie.Feb 20, 1939.
