Aug. 8, 1940Dear Bessie,
Congratulations on your marks! They are excellent. Mine could be improved! I had C in history and B- in the other things.
Your drawing was quite clever. I didn't know you were an artist. I can't draw even a straight or curved line.

The clipping is from a Brattleboro, Vt., paper. Isn't she the one you made that gorgeous map for?
I just had a letter from Miss Ruisánchez and she wants to be remembered to you. She has finished at Duke and is in New York City now. The 22nd she's sailing for Puerto Rico for a visit. Next year she will live in Mead. Have you heard yet where you'll be?
You wrote of hearing George Gilbert. My father read his book and has also read us excerpts from it. He thinks it is excellent. Have you happened to see the movie "The Mortal Storm" - about Nazi Germany and really a very good picture. I think you'd like it.
Right now we're busy getting the house cleaned up, etc., for when the folks come next week.
I've just finished a bunch of typing for mother - programs for a club she belongs to. It is a small organization, at least it seems so until you type 20 programs of 4 pages each. By the time I finished the last one I thought I'd done enough for the whole town!
Tillie finishes at Middlebury this week. She's been taking 3 French courses - grammar, phonetics, and conversation. In the evenings there was a series of lectures and concerts. She's been living in a new dorm, which, from her description, sounds much like Abbey. She also rented a piano and has been practicing every day - a busy schedule, I'd say. Helen Anders and Sally Squier have been there also.
We are all for Willkie up here. Did you listen to any of the Democratic Convention? When they nominated F.D.R., after asking for the vote of those in favor, they then asked for those opposed and declared it a unanimous vote in the affirmative all in one breath practically. It was really quite amusing to hear.
Jean de Ved's folks were here recently. They were driving through town and stopped for a visit.
Do you ever see the M.H.C. Alumnae Quarterly? You'd probably be interested to know that there is a nice page article about Miss Laird in it.
Write again sometime!
Love,
Lisa
