A Letter Written on Nov 10, 1940

Sunday Eve. Nov. 10. 1940.
7.15 P.M.

Dear little Girl:

It is almost time for Frank Singiser - and the news - but I am writing a few lines before I listen. Wasn't it wonderful that the Air Force were able to bomb Munich when Hitler was speaking in the "Beer Cellar." Too bad that Chamberlain had to die before the war was won; but he could not rally from the second operation.

[handwriting change]

(11:30 P.M. Father carries on.) Poor Chamberlain - with the best intentions, honorable etc etc - did his own country and the more decent part of mankind irreparable injury. In which respect he resembles the rest of the pacifists.

News has just come over the radio, not only that one Italian division has been annihilated by the Greeks (even its commanding general captured), but also that the supporting division are fleeing in confusion. φοβεροι εισιν οι "Ελλενες.["] Ah memories of Marathon, Thermopylae, Plataca and Xenophon's glorious 10,000!

We trust that you had a good time at Florence. Our last few days have been pretty full. Wed, we went to Watertown, including supper at Skiltons'. Thurs, chèz Devereaux - then back for a funeral, just making connections - then the Fidelity Pot-Luck supper at which I represented the family. Fri, we were like Martha ("busy about many things.") Yesterday (Sat.) expedition to the West Haven Home. We had 20 from Naug (including Jinny who acted as always with great intelligence). Then we went to Waterbury, supping at the Front Page. Then back to Naug, so that Mama could attend Ante-Natal Shower to Mrs. Bottorf at Mrs. Noyse's. And I drove back to Big Dollar, to purchase eats. Today we have had the usual Sun. program. So both of us are kind of sleepy.

Mr. Bump has sent me a reminder; so lose no time in passing on the check to him. We certainly are longing to see Our Child.

Lots of love!
Papa.
