Dear little Girl:

I am taking time out to write you what little news there is. Hope you are not too tired with your Blue-Book. I wonder if I will ever write Blue-Book - without thinking of "Blue-Beard" - and the toy theatre I had - in which was a closet - with a sliding-door - made of card-board - as the grand climax - you pulled back the sliding door - and there hung Blue-Beard's wives with their heads off. Frankenstein had nothing on that - and Mamma was always a duly appreciative audience.

On Monday - went to hear Miss Avery's Lecture on Russia. I fixed my dress and it looks very well now - thanks to your pinning it for me. I didn't have to shorten the sleeves - for taking it up on the shoulders - made the sleeve length just right. I also took sewed the darts in the back. Miss Avery was very good - spoke about Stalin - and his recognition of God. Bessie Beatty - and Levine - were the first news people - admitted to Russia - when they took the barriers - down - She (Bessie Beatty) travelled for months - with the President of Russia - in order to alleviate Famine conditions, and she lived int eh same pension in Russia with Walter Durante - who has just published his new book - "The Kremlin - and its people". Miss Avery majored in Russian History - so she was right at home in her subject - but so tired, that she kept making - "tongue mistakes" and didn't realize it; - If she doesn't rest - some - it is going to be just too bad. Nature's own way - of telling you - to slacken the pace.

Papa made one of the biggest successes in his lecture last night. The room was crowded - the largest attendance - they have had - and it went over big. Quite a few of the Waterbury Stamp Club - went to hear him. Some not congregationalists. They had cider and doughnuts for refreshment.

To-night, Papa has Sunday-School Board Meeting - and Hazel Floyd - asked me to come down to the Church - for the Women's Minstrels - and see if they sing loud enough - I am supposed to sort of make myself invisible so that nobody will see me listening in. The Fan is next Thursday & Friday. It doesn't seem possible. The Thanksgiving Offering has already reached 40 dollars - and there are a lot of envelopes to come in. Last year it was 60 dollars at the finish - so we have only $20. more to get. I am very much pleased for I imagine much pressure was brought to smash the offering - but evidently God doesn't agree with these sentiments. If I ever had my faith strengthened - it is (has been) in these last few months. To destroy or even seriously injure God's Church - is a much more difficult thing for mere man to accomplish - than I had realized - although I ought to have realized it - in the history of the Church through the ages.

Will close now and put the sugar and flour in the canisters - and get the supper ready. Wish I knew how to knit - but I will some day in the near future.

Love from the Quartette
Mamma.
