6. P. M.Dear little Girl:
Received the wonderful letter this A.M. and Papa and I were certainly proud of you. Also we thought your poems were excellent. I am so glad you took that poetry course. Altogether, it was a very happy morning for us. It will be O.K to come home for the Week-End. Papa has a full week until Friday - and then no date on Friday or Saturday - except the supper of the John Wesleys - which is not important and which you can attend or not - as you choose. You know last night when I was getting ready for bed - I said to Papa - "Goodness, I have been homesick for Bessie to-day" - and was I glad to receive your letter.
Papa has been out calling all the afternoon. This time before Quarterly Conference is both busy and bothersome. Your dress came and the sweaters - so we will send them on Monday. I was afraid the soft wool dress would be a mess - in the box over Sunday. It looks nice - the color is refreshed.
Howard Fassett is exempt from war duty - as he is raising chickens. He is working long hours - but will not have to fight. "Alright so far" as Sunny said. I think he had better not be too sure for a lot of the men - that had a twisted eye brow or an ingrowing toe-nail - thought they were exempt for the duration of the war but they will probably go in the next draft. The drawing comes on March 17 - the day of our Quarterly Conference.
To-morrow - we will have the "perfect" black-out. We have a nice spoken Irish air-warden - who came and left our card of directions[.] Papa went to the door - so I only "heard" him. We have the two shades and the flash-lights - so that is all we need - It is to be between 8 and 10. The other day when Papa and I were in New Haven - It was 4 P.M. and we were walking from the Green to Dr. D. when all at once - this thing that started blowing - like an enormous fog-horn commenced and was followed by three others in rotation. I asked Dr. D. what they were - and he said there had been some trouble - with the horns - and they have try-outs every now and then. They had the weirdest sounds - but nobody - looked around or acted as if they heard them. The bone in my jaw is almost healed now and it won't be long
nowbefore It will be ready. I will be glad.Papa just came home. He called on Mr. Mowrey - whose mother is dying. She must be quite an old lady. 75 She lives in Williamsport - They phoned him last Sunday night - that she probably would not live the night through - and to come right away - He didn't have any gas - and couldn't get any - on a Sunday night - and Something in his car needed to be fixed - so he started on Monday A.M. and arrived there at 7 P.M. He stayed until Thursday. and then had to get back to the factory and she is still alive - but unconscious and was practically unconscious when he got there. Mrs. Mowrey has had a fall and broke a rib -I didn't hear the particulars. I had my wedding ring stretched. It is just a trifle narrower - They only charged one dollar - to do it. Didn't touch the engraving inside. A beautiful job.
Betsy Shattuck is going to be married on the Sat. before Easter. She wants us all to come - and Papa says - if you could come down on that Friday - it would be O.K. but in the catalogue Spring Vacation starts March 20 - and ends Mch 31 - and I didn't suppose you would want to go back on Tuesday and come back again on Friday. I imagine the Wedding will be very simple.
It will be so good to talk over - the future plans. John Gibbud was an assistant at Vassar and he has just been made an instructor.
Will close now -
Love from us all
Mamma.P.S. Have I the dates for the Spring Vacation O.K. or has there been a change in those -
as theas there has been with the Commencement dates?[Handwriting switches from Mamma to Pop]
I enjoyed very much your
summarysummary of Prof. Lobb's sermon. Naturally I am pleased with this swing - back from the extreme emphasis on Social Service. With the pacifists swinging to defense and the social servers turning back to personal religion - I feel that after all I am being vindicated as a true prophet. We certainly have lots to talk about when you come home.
Your ever-adoring
