A Letter written on Oct 19, 1940

Dear little Girl:- I am sitting in the lovely warm kitchen - It is very cold here. The coal has just come - so Papa will build a furnace fire when he gets home. He went down to be with the painters. The church will certainly look fine. Papa has just now arrived home. He has been to the Waterbury Hospital to see Mrs. Harry Wintsch and Mrs. Lyle Shauer. Mrs. W. had a boy - she wanted a boy and Mrs. Shauer - had a girl - which she wanted. The hospital folks thought they could not save either Mrs. Shauer or the baby - then as time went on they decided to save Mrs. Shauer - and let the baby go - as they did with me - and then they were able to save both. She had two transfusions - and is doing very well. You will never guess what is sitting on the tubs - a new radio. Papa thought it would be best to get one with the money - he and I received at the wedding. We haven't been able to use ours - since the cold weather came - I was afraid the rheumatism would come back - so Papa bought an Emerson - portable - at $9.95. Was I glad - I sang at the Wedding. It is hooked on in the kitchen and works beautifully. At night now I will take it upstairs - I think the light that will be saved - will save considerable - on the electric bill. When Papa brought it home - they were in the last few minutes of play - in the Yale-Dart.mouth [sic] Game - and I heard the last 25 seconds of play - when Yale made a forward pass - and the ball was carried by one man alone over the goal line. It was said to be the most remarkable play that has ever been made - in the series of Yale-Dartmouth games that have been played during the years.

The Fidelity Bible Class fed the painters to-day.

This has been a full week and I am very tired. Nothing so much accomplished but going here and there and having to leave the things at home. Papa was worrying about the Scholarship - you are supposed to apply for at this time. I hope you have attended to it. I just heard that Great Britain has sent pamphlets over Paris - saying that Paris will be bombed in 15 days.

The concert and movies for the benefit of the Choir - will be given on Friday - I am not going to sing - but will take the tickets. At first Papa and I were going to give our American Indian program - but the talkies (given by Mrs. Taylor's son) will take 1 1/2 hours and we thought - a short musicale program - given by different members of the choir would sell more tickets. The all day sewing bee will take place this Thursday. instead of last. By the way Vesuvius is in eruption. Will close now - this letter goes a little earlier 7 instead of 8 P.M on Saturday.

Am still enjoying and thinking about the lovely time we had Sunday.

Lots of love from us all.
Mamma

Joke - told by Dr. Worley to a selected group on Mon Tuesday. at the lunch table.

Two char-women in London were talking to-gether. one said "Aren't these bombings and black outs terrible. We You never can tell when a bomb may drop and blow you into maternity." The other one answered - "Yes - and with all these blackouts you'd never know who was to blame."
