Dear little Girl: Received your welcome letter in this afternoon's mail. I will look at the nylon stockings - to-morrow. I imagine they will wear better - than the silk.
Have just returned from a "general" Quarterly Conference held at Frist [sic] Church Waterbury. The W[...]s and Hudsons - and Pearl Skelton and the Shinns - were all there. Dr. Worley presided. It was his last farewell to the ministers - as he expects to get his new church Oct. 15 - but he isn't at liberty to say where it will be.
Mrs. Jesse Hudson is moving to Waterbury - to a 5 room apartment opposite Crosby High School. He doesn't make enough money for them to stay in Naugatuck. They are evidently not going to keep their car. They live 1- minutes walk from Mr. Hudson's business. She is awfully upset about it - I felt sorry.
To-day Papa and I heard the King of England and in the middle of his speech - we heard the siren warning the British of an air attack. It sounded just like the siren that blows - for our fires in Naugatuck - except that it was much louder. I was glad to have heard it.
The other night we heard Charles Laughton as a guest speaker - on the opening of a new radio station. He was very dramatic. He said that he and his wife had heard that morning that a big Nazi bombing plane had just fallen on his home in England - wrecking the house. I don't know why he is here in America.
Mr. Harold Kazanjian (a nephew of Mr. Calvin K.) and his bride have rented Mrs. Penrose's apartment. They are on their honeymoon - and will live there on their return. He had a bad auto accident during his college days - a car ran into his car - and he had his neck broken - but it is cured now. We are going to have a wedding at the Church Oct. 12. I am going to sing and be paid for it. Details in next letter. To-morrow, I go to New Haven to have my teeth filled.
So glad you tried to-day for a part. Hope you got it. Will close now.
Love from us all.
Mamma.
