Saturday noon.
Feb. 8 - 1941.Dear little Girl:-
We received your newsy, welcome letter this A.M. I am glad that the Semester is starting out in an interesting way. I am disappointed about the Friday Class - but there is one consolation - on Fridays you will be able to take that earlier train 3.40 to Waterbury. Those things work out for the best somehow - even though you can't tell just how.
We have a busy day to-day. Papa had a wedding this A.M. Two young folks - the boy 16 and the girl 17. Juniors at High School in a town in Pa. They had to get married and I felt sorry for them. I didn't go in - but Papa said they were very nice looking. They are going to live in Naugatuck for the present - his sister and brother-in-law - have gotten him a job here, where they live - It is so hard for kids to live it down with all the wicked tongues that wag but they are married good and tight now.
Papa has now gone up to Mrs. Valentine's. Earl died yesterday afternoon. They are going to have the funeral on Monday Afternoon - at Aldersons. Mr. Lewis from the Cong. Church in Waterbury will assist Papa.
We had a terrific rain here yesterday. Our cellar didn't get it but the Noyes' cellar had 2 feet of water in it - and it must have been a mess. They keep their clothes washer - and other things in the cellar - and they had to move everything. Mr. Wyatt had the Grippe - drop in temperature etc. went back to business on Tuesday - had a relapse - and is back in bed again. I guess it was just as well that I played safe.
This afternoon, Papa and Mr. Herb. Johnson - are attending a meeting at the Meth. Church in Waterbury - followed by a supper and evening meeting. Herb - will drive Papa over.
I addressed nearly 200 of the cards - a sample of which I sent to you. It took me the better part of the day - but Papa mailed them all last evening. We hope the Supper will be well attended. It is the first "free" supper that we have tried with the exception of the Anniversary Supper.
The snow is nearly all gone. There is still a little in the streets. The air feels like Spring. I am writing now - so that Papa can mail it.
Here is a tongue-twister on the Farm Programme "a big blue bug and a big black bear". All but one contestant had trouble with it, and he said it perfectly and won $5.00
Mr. Shattuck lent Papa (correction:- His words were "This is for Mrs. Nesbit. She said she would like to read it.") "Joseph in Egypt" - so I am going to read it this week.So glad you heard Mrs. Roosevelt. She is a wonderful woman. On the Radio, they quoted her statement - as you gave it and both Papa and I thought it was an excellent answer - to the folks opposed to the bill. Alf Landon is shooting off his mouth - because F.D.R. attacked Wheeler. Also the Youth Conf. has made a bitter attack on Mrs. Roosevelt. She is through with them.
Papa has just sent a recommendation for Bill Wyatt to join the Coast Guard.
Mrs. Bottorf and Stan have named the Baby Stewart Frank - not after anybody - just because they like the names. She feels perfectly well - but has to stay in the hospital for 12 days. She will not feel so spry - when she begins to take care of the baby.
Here comes Papa. he went to the Valentines - but Mrs. V. had completely collapsed and had fallen unconscious - and the Doctor had given her sleeping medicine - to relax her nerves - She has been very brave - and she kept up until the last. Papa saw the rest of the relatives - they have I think 5 brothers and their wives - and some other relatives - quite a family.
Papa wants me to tell you that at the present moment - finances are "not" but as soon as they improve - he will send you some. The Wedding this AM.
willcame providentially to tide us over - until Wednesday. Papa and I thought it would be nice to celebrate his birthday when you come home - on the week-end of the 22nd. Papa needs shirts and needs them very much - we can get them for his birthday and you and he can pick them out together. How about it?Love
Mamma.
