A Letter Written on Aug 6, 1912

[This is in Bessie's Pop's handwriting. I assume it is a letter to Bessie's Mamma. He was a Sumerian scholar, so the reference to tablets is a reference to cuneiform tablets he is translating.]

My Own Little Girl;-

I have just gotten another one of those delightful little letters. It makes the Water Gap seem much nearer - and I can almost hear you speaking.

So Mr. Kerr is raising cows. I'll bet that the milk is diluted with hot air instead of water.

Basking Ridge also has been quite cool. The evenings especially are quite bracing. But I don't suppose it the cool spell will last long - and I certainly long for the air of the Gap - especially in the vicinity of the Ostrich Farm.

I am working away at the tablets in fine style. This morning I tackled a new one, and read it as follows:- "One gur and one hundred twenty qo of the finest wheat, for a regular offering, from Sûna Bigu-Nidê (?) has received." - Not very important information. But it means that I am getting somewhere. And it certainly is a relief to find a tablet that doesn't say anything about sheep.

Just think in less than a week I'll see you! - - But, O dear! I hope that the seven days pass more rapidly than the three that are gone. I surely am doing some strenuous calling, to pass the time away.

Dear Brown-Eyes, my little pink rose is not all gone yet. It has been a lot of company to me.

This potion should be intensified greatly and heated seven-fold - and even then it would not express my feelings.
