A Letter Written on Oct 12, 1907

My dear Miss Marks:

The socialists whom I mentioned the other day are:

1) W. J. Ghent, head of the Rand School and author of Our Benevolent Feudalism, Mass and Class.

2) John Spargo, author of The Bitter Cry of the Children, The Socialists &c

3) Sinclair - (The Jungle)

4) Edwin Markham - (The Man with the Hoe)

5) Leonard Abbott of Current Literature

6) Prof Charles Beard of Columbia University

Any one of these, would, I think, make an interesting speaker. Mr Ghent, I've never heard in public, but he is said to be good, and John Spargo is undoubtedly an effective speaker. Dr Beard, a younger man, already in possession of a brilliant future, speaks with equal success to both ends of New York.

I'm glad you have had such a fine beginning in Holyoke & want to hear more of your work. You are happy in what you have to give. I know of no material possession I should rather bestow even to persons in Economic distress, than a love of literature.

When you can spare the time for a visit with me here, do let me know. I'm home on Tuesday evenings, but I should enjoy more an afternoon when I might be more free. Thursday next and Monday the 21st hold my only engagements now.

Yours most sincerely Amy Hewes
