A Letter Written on Mar 2, 1913

[I suspect that this letter doesn't really go with the envelope or the other enclosure, since it was written in Brooklyn and the envelope was postmarked in Pennsylvania. The enclosure came from Pennsylvania, so I think it belongs to the envelope. But I think the envelope for the Brooklyn letter no longer exists, and the Brooklyn letter was put in this envelope for safe-keeping after it was received.]

Dear Jane,

Such a job to get started at letter writing! And now it's late, and Monday always means lots of work. Mother has perhaps told you that I am doing C.O.S. work in Brooklyn. The Charity Organization here isn't is [sic] good as the Phila. one but it has been whooping it up lately and will do nicely for a starter. I can get into the Phila office almost any time. There was a place there about Xmas. Jamie has a friend on the inside. Just at present I must stay in N.Y. and hold down those settlement kids over a week. You know, I think it's rather nice of me to keep them, because Saturday afternoons look pretty nice - and to give every one of them up - to say nothing of the preparation I have to do during the week! But I'll get off from shop. How is your work coming Are you marching tomorrow? I wish I were.

Do write and tell me all about all of you. How is Alice and has she hired Josiah yet. Spring is coming and I suppose she will need him to manage her garden properly. Did you hear that the young fellow proposed to me? I shall want to know if he is working before I tie myself up with him. I find most of the trouble with the families we have to keep is men out of work - so I feel very strongly on this point you see. When Ella's chest gets so full that it leaks out into the village do write me - and how are the students and the chapel. Does Mr Roach ever come over. If you see him, do tell him I am lead over heals [sic] in social work and I never mention religion to any of my "patients". His talk about "religious" settlements and converting people makes me tired and shows just about how much he knows about the real social work in New York. I came very near taking a position in a "religious" settlement, a kind Providence prevented me, and now nothing could hire me to work in a settlement which "converts" people. Mr Roach said he was coming thru N.Y. on his way west. I hope he will let me know, and will go over to the Riis House. He is going to play a losing game unless he changes some of his century old ideas. John and I have just been to St Bartholomews and heard several choruses from the "Messiah" - Still I often wish I could get back to our own chapel - Do remember me to everyone Mrs Jones is still in town is she not? Hadassale writes that the car service is better. I like to know all the news and gossip agoing. I don't got much now that Susan & [...] are in town[.]

Love to all the family especially yourself from [...]
