My dear Miss Turner:

Your card came while I was away on a brief vacation. I am most sorry to hear of your mother's death. It is not much consolation to reflect that you have had her many years more than are granted to most of us. After such long and devoted services, you will naturally find the gap hard to fill. But you are a resolute and industrious woman and you have the blessing of an absorbing profession, in which you have had a masked success. How many times - when troubles were hard to bear - have I blessed my fate for physiology!

I shall be in Boston or near it, the rest of the summer. It is possible that in the week you mention I may be away two days and a night. Please let me know as soon as you can when you reach Boston and how long you are to be here. I shall be very glad to see you.

Faithfully
W. T. Porter.
