A Letter from Gertrude to her father, Jun 11, 1878

Wash Fem Sem
June 11th '78.

Dear Pa

Edd [her older brother] sent me up Mother's letter this evening. I was very glad to get it, as I have been under the weather since Friday, but will try and go in School to morrow, Mother said you wished me to send you my bill, I have been making desperate efforts at that in the last two letters I wrote you, but will try it again. Miss S has not finished looking over my book and wash bill but as nearly as I can tell it will be about $12 or $13, and as you know there is $30 on my School bill yet unpaid, which will make $43 I owe Miss S.

I don't wonder you think my dress-making bill enormous[.] I do myself but cannot help it. I have not yet settled for my silk dress, I ripped it all up myself, and enclosed is the bill she sent me.

Edd, gave me $10 when he received your letter, and intends giving me more but I would rather he would not, for I think he needs it himself.

My fare home will be $2, and will have to get about three bquettes [sic] for Commence[.] Can't get out of it. Which will be something over $3.

Miss I. informed us the other day in School Hall the other day that she expected all to settle our bills before we left. I would like to hear from you by Saturday or Friday if convenient.

Our musicial entertainment takes place next Teusday [sic] evening, we have sort of a Literary entertainment Wednesday afternoon in which I take part.

I will be home Wednesday or Thursday week, Received part of my photos last night, I think they are pretty good but are better looking than the original.

Please write real soon
much love to all
Your aff. Daughter
Gertrude [about 14 years old]
