[A sketch of a dancing female stick figure entitled "Springtime Spirit"]A May Night
Dear Peg,
I was going to be very crushingly cruel, and not write to thee, because thee hasn't written to me for quite some time, and I have an idea the[e] writes to Bill quite often and lengthily, none the less. But I cherish an affectionate remembrance of thee, and I seized my pen by the eyebrows, shook it into position, and now I address thee.
I take it thee and Eva are bosom friends (give her my greetings) and do spend a great deal of time with each other. Now that is fine, only thee should write to me none the less. I take it you young women do talk to each then at length about your young gentlemen, F. and W. Now, be prepared, for that is about what I am going to do.
Now I take it I have mentioned Hal before, and I think thee probably is interested - well, do be, for that is nice. He combines a clever brain (like John's, for instance) with a mighty nice appearance. Thee should see him in a dinner coat!) He is sufficiently tall, six feet, and has a most engaging smile. - And writes the nicest letters, and within two days of the time he receives yours, which is most intriguing. He's a Yale man, thee knows, and has written to ask if he may come up again. So I reckon he will (unless something peculiar happens), as I shan't discourage him.
Well now I wish thee could see him, for I think thee would like him. Maybe thee will see him - it's not utterly impossible. Who knows? And it's most fascinating to try to entertain him. Thee knows I can do any thing I like with, or to, John Nono and Joe. I always know what will happen next. But Hal is clever, and nice, yet far from transparent, and older than the others, and it's more of an adventure to entertain a man. I wish thee could see him.
How's Joe, do tell. Will the lad ever get well? He wrote me a letter the other day expressing his hopes of seeing me soon and often, and dear me, I have to tell him I'm rushing away again.
I'm fighting with John again, but that's better than too many proposals or something. And as for now, he's being a dear.
- Rob Adams was coming over last week, but couldn't get away at the last minute, so he's coming this week probably. And Miles Mehall and Lester trotting over again. Etc. and etc. I'm having a pretty good time but do write to me
P.S. If anyone, hearing of my birthday, wants to give me money (if they happen to have any money) encourage them in their good intentions.
