A Letter Written on Nov 21, 1897

Springfield, Nov. 21, 1897.

My dearest Mama, -

Of course I was a little disturbed to know Marcia was going but on the whole I am glad. I only hope that she wont [sic] now back down when it comes to the real point of going. Mamie's postal I got Thursday night and I was relieved you know there was somebody definite in view. When will she come? I wish Marcia was going before I get home. I could do the work while I was there if the new woman could come on Saturday. I hope she will be an agreeable person. Mame spoke as though Mrs. Arthur Alden knew of her. How did she happen to call?

There has been a new train put on the B&A and I think that I shall be able to get through Wed. night but not until the last train.

I've had a letter from Addie and also I got the one from Marie Perkins which you remailed. She seems to be very well satisfied with her new husband. She didn't say any thing about Charlie. Is he with them or somewhere else in Texas? Noah and Georgia must have been much worried about him.

We had a genuine snow-storm Friday and Saturday up here. I think two inches of snow or more must have fallen. I wished that I had seen that boy about shovelling paths before I came away. Its [sic] melting rapidly here now and there's no hope of sleighing for Thanksgiving. I begrudge every nickel I spend on carfare but I've had to ride several times lately. You see last year I had those two and a half cent tickets and it made a big difference. Every body else seems to think a car-fare is such a very little but I notice it counts up like everything still of course its [sic] cheaper to ride than get wet.

I went up to College for Founder's Day on Thursday. I'll send you a paper with some of the speeches in it. Miss Wood and Miss Allen went up with me. Alice Holmes was up from Hartford and she came down and staid over night with me. The window that '96 put in the Chapel is very pretty and we feel quite proud of it. There is still quite a little sum lacking for the endowment fund which Dr. Pearsons wants raised before Jan 1. 1898.

Now just three days and I'll be home.

Your loving Nellie.
