Kashima Maru
January 1st. 1931.Dear Miss Turner;
This is to wish you a very happy year for 1931. We are arriving at Shanghai this morning. Altho. the storm has made us late two days but we are very happy that we shall be at our destination today. I cannot just say how much I have enjoyed the tripf or there were times when I failed to see justice and humanity. At Portsaid, Columbo, Singapore, Hongkong I saw too much of a constrast between British people and other races. I have learned much for certain things one could never get in books. The ocean trip has been an easy one for I have learned to adjust my diet. I remember a lecrure [sic] once which told people how to avoid seasickness - light load and and [sic] daily exercise. Light load means eat less than an ordinary meal.
At each city I have written down my impressions and reflections and I shall gather them and put down in form for some of my friends. After this trip I certainly would know how to travel better to advantage next time.
On boat I met two very fine Chinese students - one from America, other from Germany. The one from Germany is only seventeen years old and he is an earnest student. He studied daily two or three hours on boat. The one from America has finished his medical education and is going to join his father and mother in practice.
I shall be at Shanghai for two weeks before going back to my hospital work. It will be a happy occasion for I have so many relatives and friends at Shanghai. When I get back to Tientsin I would tell you more in detail about my travelling from Naples to Shanghai. I would also tell you the Siberia way in case you would come to East on way to America.
During this month on ocean I have almost no writing and reading. I have done much knitting for our new baby who is going to arrive in January. This baby will call me grant [sic] aunt. I have made two pairs of socks, one blanket, one hood, two shirts, one suit and I am making another blanket. The boat is rocking some yet and I will close this letter. With much affectionate love.
Yours lovingly,
Me-iung Ting.Shanghai.
