Peiyang Women's Hospital
Tientsin, China.June 21st, 1934.
My dear Miss Turner:
Eversince [sic] my return from conference at Nanking I have been extremely busy with work. Just now I have few very sick patients at hospital and they take up all my time. Indeed this is a life of strain at hospital. As soon as some are better other emergency cases come in. They are interesting but at times the doctor has to go thru nervous strain. The doctor is away for vacation so this means extra work. My girls are getting bigger everyday [sic] and they do not need much of my time now. There are too few women doctors and the demand is so great. Our little hospital is getting very popular as people begin to know our work. Formerly we seldom have patients from other doctors of the city but now they are sending in their cases to us. This also means extra work to our staff. For this summer we shall again be busy with our building program. We are putting up a
newtwo story building for our nurses.By the time this letter reaches you probably you would be at Woodshole. [sic] I shall mail this letter to your address at college for the post office will forward this letter wherever you should be. I am sure that you would spend some time for a good vacation as to get rested up for the fall work. You have so many summer resorts where you can get quiet rest. Our beach at Peitaiho is getting too popular as so many Russians have moved in. They are a noisy lot. I shall be glad to hear about your summer vacation. Our girls are going to beach as usual. Since we have a little cottage there and it is less expensive to be there than any other place.

This is a most recent kodek picture I took of Mary Jean and Abby. The latter is the one on left of this picture. Your little namesake is getting to be a tall girl. Both these girls are going to be taller than their sister at Bryn Mawr. Probably you have learned that Vung Yuin won two scholarships at Bryn Mawr for being the best in the junior class and the best in her major subjects. We are indeed very proud of her record. She wants to come home summer of 1935. Since she has been so good in her college work we feel we must grant her the request although this means some sacrifice on our part. Mary Jean is not so good a student as Abby but Mary Jean aplies herself better so she makes better grades in school. Abby is very dreamy and she takes herown [sic] sweet time to do things. She is very slow in her movements but learns quickly. These two girls have added much happiness with general growth. Because of added milk in their diet these two girls are growing to be bigger and taller than girls of thier [sic] corresponding ages.

This paper clip will tell you about Japan's policy toward China. She is seeking every chance to fight against China. Because of this foolish incident Japan has sent warships to Nanking already. I was so nervous for few days. I have been to Nanking recently and I was so afraid that Japan would take this chance to bomb Nanking. I never prayed so much in my life as I prayed for China this time. If this new city Nanking should be destroyed by war it would take another fifty years to rebuild it. I have been to the recent war zone of Shanghai. Japanese soldiers have destroyed thousand homes of the innocent and killed so many hundreds of student population. China is like a very sick person just recovering from illness and she cannot stand any further strain. I was happy when metropolitan polce [sic] found this crazy man who has caused so much trouble. At Nanking our government poice had to go from house to house to investigate this matter. How can our government be held responsible for the action of an individual. Fortunately he did not commit suicide; otherwise China would be suffering innocent one [sic] again. How long the world will tolerate Japan's intrigue I wonder. But for China she must give all her time to progress for a better and a stronger China. We as citizens must do what we can to help this large family.
I close this letter with love from all of us three. We wish you a very pleasant summer vacation.
Yours lovingly,
M. I. Ting.Barbara Yen [MHC 1938] will come to Mount Holyoke College this coming fall. She will come to see you.
