Peiyang Women's Hospital, Tientsin, China.My dear Miss Turner;
This is July 29th and soon you would be sailing for America. I do not have your address and I would address this letter to college so as to welcome you back home. How I wish that I could do this in person but the next best is a letter. You would have the same feeling on return as I experienced. It is nice to go away for study and change but it is nicer to get back to work. After certain length of time one feels the desire to work. I hope that you have gotten from Professor Krogh what you expected. When you publish your work do send me a copy.
Half of our satff [sic] is away for vacation and each of us is carrying a little extra load. For two months I have been the only resident physician at hospital. I have been up a good deal at nights. We had some very serious cases at hospital also. Three of our graduate nurses are graduating in the Obstetrical Course this September. Each nurse has 50 cases at hospital and twenty five out at homes. The course is of two years-eleven months a year. Altho we have only three graduates but I feel it is better to have fewer trained well than too many half trained. We have already too many half baked people in China. We must not produce more. Sixteen pupil nurse are going to take their national examination this December. Since coming home I havehad [sic] to work right away and had little time for study or reading. Just now my two children are away. When they are at home I can do so little. If I leave everything to their nurse they do not behave at all. I have been keeping them next to my room in order to give them little home life.
I took a short vacation last week at beach. My three nephews are here also. Thus I have a family of five children at beach. They are brothers and sisters. Mary is learning to swim but Abby would only wade in water. Abby is timid by nature. Both girls are growing stronger. Mary has a very charming personality and she has many friends. Abby is a student by nature. She likes to read and study her books[.] She certainly can read consdering [sic] the fact that she is only five years old. My oledest niece in America will get to Bryn Mawr College as a freshman this fall. I have asked her to write to you about her courses of study. She did have Latin and French in the Shipley School. She did very well in her work and was on honor roll. Just now she is at Detroit with my friend Dr. Farquharson.
My coowrker [sic] Dr. K. H. Li is coming to America in August. I am sorry thats [sic] she has not enough English to take up real post-graduate study. But she has enough of medical vocabulary to get great deal by being in a hospital for a year. This would give her a change and at the same time she would be able to pick up from observation. She will be at West Philadelphia Hospital for Women. I was there once for six months and I liked the service. The hospital gives excellent service in Ob. and Gyn. These two branches a woman physician must know in China to practice Medicine here. Dr. Li is bringing you a small package for me. I hope that you would enjoy the content of this little package. I close this letter with much love.
Yours lovingly,
Me-inng TingJuly 29th, 193 . [sic]
