A Letter written Jan 12, 1948

Dear Miss Turner;

The other side of the paper will tell you of everything. The interesting book_ The Fever Bark Tree came and I am reading a chapter here and thre. The chapter on Batann and Corregidor_ There is a sentence which says "Give me four physicians and I will give you back four companies." Indeed it is a great privilege to be a physician. The chapter on seeking quinine in this last war is most facinating [sic]. Atabrine and Plasmochin can be gotten at Tientsin and in fact we have used Atabrine eversince [sic] the arrival of American marines. How everthere [sic] is one which is called SN 7818_ the latter is supposed to be better than atabrine. This one I do not know anything about. China owes her modern education thru the work of chrsitian [sic] church. Because missionaries came to China to preach and to teach so schools were established. In chrstian [sic] schools science was first taught. I remember in my chilhood [sic] about little scinece [sic] readers I have studied. In ourown [sic] schools we studied only classics and histories. Thus I certainly appreciate what the chrsitian [sic] church has done for China thru her schools in every part of the country. I also think of the church as the place for character building. So my small way I always want to remember the church. Moore Memorial Chucrh [sic] is my childhood church where I went to Sunday Schools and where I started or supervised a Sunday School for poor street children during my high school life. The home, the school, the church and the college all help to shape our life for good. We cannot do everything but we can select few things to do. In my humble way I always want to remember the church and the chrsitian [sic] colleges. This time at the World's Y. W. C. A. confernce [sic] I have noticed every leader is from a christian college either in China or America.

I have not had a letter from you yet in telling me about sending this book to me. I am enjoying it and I am appreaciting [sic] any reading material. Too many books have been destroyed by Japanese. Our libraries are very poor in books now.

War has given us few good things also like Penicillin, Ddt powder and now we have streptomycin plus Atabrine. I think Sulfa drugs came before war time.

Just now I am very busy because of relief work. One nightmare is over and it seems to me another nightmare is on her way that is Red War. Other people call this civil war. Russia is really back of the whole thing. Russia wants to make China Red then other parts of the world. I hope that in your good country your people would be intelligent enough not to allow such ism to hinder your individual freedom and individual right.

I forgot to tell you that the above church was taken by Japanese as a military office. The pipe organ and benches were spoiled. Everything was taken away except the solid building. We are getting it in shape now.

With much love
Me_iung Ting

Dr. Mary I. Ting,
Tientsin

Dear Dr. Ting-

We have received thru Mrs. Wong your generous gift of Twelve Million Dollars ($12,000,000) for the painting of the inside of the church. We are very very grateful and will do our best to make the church look fresh and worshipful inside. When you come to Shanghai the next time please come by and enjoy it with us.

We are having a Centennial celebration in Soochow on Dec.31 in connection with our Annual Conference. We are having some exhibits of the work during this brief period of 100 years. The Childrens Division is going to use your picture showing a child who came and grew up and remembered. They could not find your child picture in time, so the artist is drawing a little child like she thinks you must have looked on those glad Sunday mornings when you came to Sunday School, and besides it will be a more recent picture which Mrs. Wong gave us. I wish that you could see it.

With best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Mrs. Anderson and myself and from the workers and members of this church, I am

Sincerely,
Sidney R. Anderson
