Madison University July 17th 1847 -

Good evening, Caroline,

How do you do, this evening. Forgive me for not responding to your kind salutation a few mornings since, as I did not at the time hear your footstep approaching or your words addressed to my ear; but, my friend, be assured 'tis not to me a pleasant thing that I am no longer able to hear the voice of kind friends in K. I have "forgotten" no one of them; and though with one of them, I, perhaps, have hardly kept my "promise"; I hope she will pardon me on my 'promising' to do better hereafter . . . I am well and enjoy myself quite well, but nothing just now could afford me much greater pleasure than to spend a few days as we did a year since in Morgan. I have often thought of them and sincerely do I hope that at no very distant day we may be permited [sic] to renew such pleasures . . . Please remember me kindly to Mr. & Mrs. Osborn and your sister. Accept also kindly this few lines to which I may not now add more, from

Your friend,
Luke Osborn
