H. D. Sugathapala and Gertrude Sugathapala (nee Gunaratnayake)
Shani Pereira contacted me in Sept 2014, and again in Jan 2015 to share their wedding photo and more memories:
"I am very excited to come across the following letter http://www.mtholyoke.edu/~dalbino/letters/text/india02.html on your website. Here my grand-uncle and grand-aunt are referred to in this letter. They were an extraordinary couple who used primary school education to recognise and cultivate artistic capabilities of young students in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). I do have photos of them and remarkably my very own grandmother retold these journeys to Adams Peak throughout my childhood.
Gertie was the eldest daughter of a tea taster. She had one brother (Bertrum, nicknamed Bunny), Edith (who sadly passed away during childhood), Turin (still living and is the mother of UN Human rights award winner the late Ms. Sunila Abeysekera) and her youngest sister Grace (my beloved granny).
Grace actually accompanied Sugar on the retold journey in the India Letters- this is why it stood out! One of the most amazing stories she retold to me on demand! All the Gunaratnayake girls were privileged to receive an education in English administered schools by Irish nuns at the Good Shepherd Convent in Kandy, Sri Lanka."
