HISTORY: The V-8s began as accompaniment for a dance sequence at the 1942 Mount Holyoke Junior Show; they were such a hit that the eight women were soon singing on their own. Appropriate to the era, they named themselves after the World War II phrase "V for Victory." They sang at nearby Westover Air Force Base when the war began and were the the [sic] first non-professionals to sing at the famous Stage Door Canteen in New York City.
And so the V-8s began long before the high performance engine or a certain vegetable juice, although the group was once asked to be in the juice company's ads. 57 years later, we still sing some of the original group's songs and apply their smooth harmonies to tunes by everyone from the Andrews Sisters to the [sic] Toni Braxton.
