THE PLOT: Once Upon A Park is a fantasy about a not-at-all ordinary little Girl whose magical seeds produce a peculiar, but delicious fruit. The turnberry strawnips, which mysteriously spring up wherever she is, have a marked effect on the morale of the Park People, and a disastrous effect on the sales of Ferguson Frozen fudgesicles. Foster J. Ferguson, the cigar-smoking, confident executive decides not to eliminate his competition but to consolidate - to mass-produce and freeze the now-popular turnberry strawnips. But the chemist's report, which indicates that the fruit defies freezing and the Girl's refusal of his offer to buy her out send him into a rage. Furious, he sends for a tranquilizer, which, however, puts him to sleep. In a dream, he imagines himself the King of Fergusonland. The Girl, summoned to the palace, tells an amazed court that only certain people can grow them. In spite of his ominous dream, Ferguson remains undaunted. He sends four employees to the park to steal the plants so that he can subject them to scientific analysis. After vigorous effort, the thieves tear the plant from the earth, only to flee in terror when it shrivels up and dies. Meanwhile, it looks as if Ferguson might triumph in the end after all. The Girl learns that she must leave; with no one to grow the seeds, there will be no more turnberry strawnips. But to the relief of the Girl and the delight of everyone - except of course Foster J. Ferguson, the kindhearted park guard Louis discovers that he has the power to make the seeds grow. And so the strange and wonderful fruit continues to flourish in the park. |
