THE PLOT: "Radiance"! is the goal, the quintessence, the battle cry! Hattie Hartshead, editor-in-chief of The Age of Radiance, has taken her high-fashion magazine to the top of its field by selling the American woman dreams, by giving her a life which is but "a fantasy of loveliness." Miss Hattie, however, is anything but radiant: she is dowdy. Her appearance is kept secret - until she is the subject of an exposé by Intimate Magazine. The public is out-raged: their "leader" is not radiant, she is a fraud. Miss Hattie is forced to resign.
Meanwhile Sam Snorpe, son of the magazine's publisher, and Darlene Devastate, Miss Hattie's assistant, have fallen in love. Sam is appointed the new editor-in-chief. He tries to give the American woman practicality - better still, reality - and fails miserably. The public condemns The Age of Radiance. The magazine's staff begs Miss Hattie to return, if only she will become "radiant" - dress up a little. Miss Hattie refuses, wishing only to know who betrayed her to Intimate. At Darlene and Sam's wedding reception, the public assembles to proclaim the death of The Age of Radiance. But - Miss Hattie appears - radiant! The magazine is saved. The public departs in ecstasy. However, Miss Hattie's change to radiance is a costume with only a front. In the back, unbeknownst to anyone, she is still dowdy ... and very, very wise. S.E.T. |
