THE PLOT: That's The Spirit traces the conflict of faith versus reason in the little-known border town of Hiccup, Tennessee. When the local inhabitants see smoke on Corn Pone Mountain the eddicated group deride the townspeople for going to the mountain where Maggie Walpurgis, the local conjure lady is conjurin' up a spirit. Jake, graduate of Tennessee "Agi," is especially aggrieved to see that Appleblossom, his ladyfair, has forgotten her logic and gone too. On Corn Pone Mountain, Maggie laments her inability to conjure up spirits, placing the blame on the little eddication that the mountain folks have received - it is just enough to make them doubt. In an attempt to curb their loss of faith, Magie arranges for a bogus spirit to rise from the pot. Jake and his followers are busy lambasting her seance when much to the surprise of all present, especially Maggie, Noah rises from the pot and foretells a flood. While the people, with great faith, start building an ark, Jake, with the assistance of the State Revenue Men, tries to prove to the mountain folk that there will be no flood. When the short-wave radio announces in a voice surprisingly like Noah's that the Tennessee Dam has burst and that all inhabitants had better seek shelter, both groups are reconciled. As Maggie puts it: "In a crisis, we're all (faith and reason) in the same boat."
