Letters from Abby Turner to Cornelia Clapp, 1917-1918
History
These letters were written by Abby Turner to Cornelia Clapp shortly after Dr. Clapp's retirement to Mount Dora, Florida in 1916. Unfortunately, the envelopes were not saved, and Abby had the habit of omitting the year when she dated a letter. Fortunately, the letters document a time period that is quite distinctive (the 1917 Williston Hall fire), and I had other letters Abby sent and received after the Williston fire that helped illuminate these, so the letters could be accurately dated.

- back "Wed. night. These days are not idle ones! But I must tell you we're getting on well. Folks are very good. Jane Carpenter sent 10.00 for new building at once. Letters from Dr. Sedgwick, Dr. Porter & others. Amherst & Aggie both offer to lend things. - Cause of fire pretty surely electric cross wires - not us, or our belongings, thanks be! The saved stuff is good - but so little! Practically all Miss Stokey's and mine (though very little all told) - but some Ann can use, I'm glad to say. We may have a temporary building on old foundations for Ann & me - and maybe Stokey (who hasn't come yet!) I'm crazy to write you a lot but I've worked by candle until midnight and can't see any more. I'm sending some pictures. There are many juicy bits! A.H.T."
