A Letter Written on Feb 24, 1955

[The dating of this letter was done by noting that by this letter that the Othello production was the week before. Assuming she wrote the Thursday that was two days before the Othello production, that would make it Feb 24.]

Wednesday Thursday A.M.

Dear Mom,

Got your letter yesterday & was really shocked to hear about Bob Smith's death. It was really a tragedy.

I'm enclosing a chart I picked up about where the $1800 goes. Thought you might be interested.

The weekend was really fun. My date was a sophomore from St. Louis & a tremendous guy. We're hoping they'll come up again soon. It wasn't very expensive as they stayed at Amherst.

We had a 6 A.M. fire drill Ash Wednesday & several of us went to the early communion service in the chapel. I'd never been to an Episcopalian communion service before and I enjoyed it.

Wed. we had a horrible Math Blue Book. It wasn't very hard but awfully long & no one finished it. We're hoping the curve will be low!

This morning freshman choir participated in a very nice chapel service - all music. A senior played several Brahms organ numbers & choir sang two others.

Got paid $1.80 for my services in P.D.R. [Private Dining Room] Doesn't seem like much for 4 times but it helps. Also - the work's fun.

Spent two afternoons this week cl collecting for S.G.A. (Student Government Assoc.) Payday. It's a great system. Everyone pays all dues, etc. for every organization on campus at one time. However, collecting takes time - one of the joys of being treasurer.

Jeannie Romig was elected to "Nom Com" (nominating committee) for next year.

Wrote to Müllers (in German, no less).

Got a call Tues. night from Tom Metcalfe inviting me over to Amherst Sat. night to see production of "Othello." Should be most interesting. I was sort of surprised that he called.

Also - Edgy's brother Phillip & girl are coming up again this weekend. They must have had fun last time. I don't know yet if I'll go skiing both days or just one. All depends upon the work situation. Actually though, I've worked pretty hard since I got back (not counting weekends)

Saw by the church bulletin that Rachel has a baby daughter. Bet the Lemiens are happy. But where did they get the name Ada Jane?

Don't remember if I told you that we have a new Psych instructor. We were very sorry to see Mr. Stokes go & regret it more every time the new one lectures. Oh, well.

Guess the skiing trip spring vacation is off. In talking with Betsy I discovered it would cost around $50 for 4 days & that I can't afford.

Almost time for German class. Must write Nancy Savage soon.

Love,
Liz

P.S.
Gave up chocolate & ice cream for Lent. The supreme sacrifice for me, as we have ice cream 3 times a week.

P.P.S. Discovered Ellen Taylor was House President of Wilder last year.
