A Letter Written May 4, 1849

Dear Mother,

I suppose you will want to know how we get to South Hadley, & will expect a letter Saturday. We are now about forty miles from Springfield, and are travelling very fast. You will hear from father all about us till we left Boston. We had quite a pleasant visit at Mrs. Holmes's and I do not feel any more tired than I have almost every night since I came home, and not so much so as I have sometimes. One or two of the young ladies belonging to the Seminary got into the cars at Worcester I believe. They are not in the car with us, but I saw them getting in, & thought they looked like some of our scholars. I shall have to send this so early in the morning that I shan't have time to write any after we get to South Hadley onto to tell you we are there. The cars jolt so that I find it very hard to write, and it is growing rather dark, so I shall have to leave it. It is quite cloudy, & has been so most of the time since we left Boston, and looks some like rain.

Friday morn.
Well we are at South Hadley once more. We arrived here in safety a little before ten o'clock, there were five of us to come across the ferry and a gentleman besides. Miss Curtis the teacher who went home sick died last Friday. I have not time to write more.

Susan
