Dear Mamma:-I guess I shall have time to write you a short letter before dinner. I'll put Jessee's letter in. [no longer with the letter] Thank you for sending it. Ask her when you write when she is going to take her vacation and what she is going to do. She ought to have a month anyhow.
I'm glad there has been rain all around to put out the fires. Emma said there were bad ones near Machias. Anne has just come, and I suppose it's time to get ready for dinner. I wish they had ice-cream every night - instead of once or twice a week. It is getting hot again fast.
We had another examination today in chemistry and I worked hard for it - just crammed, for that was the only thing to do. It doesn't really do any good, and makes me cross to work hard for so many hours, but some time I may want the certificate, and I can't get it unless I take these exams. I presume there will be two or three more and then the final. The laboratory work I enjoy and some parts of the study part. The physiology doesn't amount to a lot because I spend so little time there.
Miss Woolley spent Monday night with Miss Moody at Woods Hole, and the girls had a great lark, planning how to give her two spoons, so she wouldn't have to lick one as they do, for they really have only one apiece. But they had a good time I judge. Alice wrote us about it both before and after.
Miss Smith expects her sister and Helen this week. I don't know how long she will stay, I am sure. Mrs. Smith is uncertain whether to go to Pemaquid or not. She's had a room engaged, I believe, but the last Miss Smith wrote was that she was going to write to Mrs. Hoag where we are going to see if she had a room left. I don't believe Mrs. Smith would like it there as I think there are very few people, and she has always liked seeing people at Pemaquid.
I must get ready for dinner. The May fly does no harm. I believe the current worm comes from a beetle but I'm not sure. Looked it up once but I've forgotten.
Love to you,
