July 30, 1940Dear Bessie,
Your letter could not have come at a better time. I had broken my eyeglasses and was quite bored since there wasn't much I could do without them. Anyway Parny had a rest.
For exercise I've been playing badminton. I have a four-player outdoor set. The wind certainly makes a lot of difference. How is your tennis playing? I suppose you have quite a tan.
Isn't this heat spell terrible? I've been reading quite a bit, playing the piano, and doing the housework.
Denny was down for a week-end. We had fun although it rained most of the time. We managed to go swimming at a near-by lake and have a hot-dog roast between showers.
There was a
newspaperstatement in one of the local newspapers that Miss Brotherton was recently married. Wasn't she your mythology professor?I hope you all are well. Say Hello to your parents for me.
Have you been playing croquet since college?
Do write soon; I shall love to hear from you.
Love,
SylviaP.S. Parny sends its love.
Please excuse the writing; I'm in one of those reclining chairs on the southwest porch - the only spot with a breeze.
