"Copyright Warning / Copyrighted by Underwood & Underwood New York / Edna Dean Proctor, 89 years old, writer, dreamer, idealist and seer! / 'Come back O magical evenings / of Decembers long ago,.......' / Edna Dean Proctor's poem, 'The Portsmouth Sailor', one of the most haunting of the folk poems of New England. The poem acquaints us with this dear old lady, who saw evidence of new freedom 50 years ago, and wrote of the nation in prophetic tone. She was among the first American women to travel in Russia and to become acquainted with the country and the people. She says that at that time when in Russia 50 years ago she saw the dawn of Bulwark against Asia. Her book, 'Russian Journey', written in 1872 stirred the British capital in a chapter on Sebastopol, which resulted in the renovating of a long neglected cemetery. Her latest book, written on her 89th year 'The Glory of Toil' has just appeared and she is still writing enthusiastically, with interest on the present day events. She however expresses her great hope for the Russian people. / Photo of Edna Dean Proctor. S-28952."
