Part of a Letter
page 5 "(5.) We were very much interested in an article that came out in the last [...] on Mt. Holyoke College, giving news of the college buildings etc (11 in all) and most important of all, a beautiful full page picture of President Wooley. I like the picture very much I am anxious to have you see it and tell us if it is a good one. I think there is something very attractive and winning about it and at the same time, a dignity and power. We also found another picture of her in an old Congregationalist, one taken when she was much younger. There was quite a long article about her, giving some accounts of her life, for this was at the time she was elected president of Mt. Holyoke. Perhaps you would be interested if you do not know them already. She was born July 13, 1863, which makes her almost 43, she graduated from Wheaton Seminary in 1884, at 21 you see and from Brown University in 1894., and was the first woman to receive the degree of AB from that University. She took post work there and then taught in Wellesley, becoming president of Mt. Holyoke in 1900. There was one thing that amused me some, for she must know everything. It said that while in College she made a specialty of History, [...] paying special attention to Latin, Greek, German & Hebrew and also making a special study of Political Science, Philosophy, Psychology and one or two other sciences that I've forgotten. Then when she gaught before coming to Holyoke, she was at the head of literature and Bible department. Doesn't that show knowledge of almost everything? Floss was intending [... this is where the item was pasted to the book...] up for a time and afterwards she learned that the child of her sister Jennie, in whose house she was to visit first has become ill with Scarlet fever. Well, my dearest sister, I must close. When you see this awful looking envelope coming I'm afraid you will be disgusted and when you see this long letter feel more discouraged than ever at the trials of exam weeks. Very lovingly, my college sister, Mary."

Excuse Note
front On Mount Holyoke College letterhead: "Miss Carrie E. Reasons: I had a very hard cold, and the storm was so severe that the electric & steam cars did not run on Wednesday, and 6:30 was the earliest that I could reach South Hadley on Thursday, as we live seven miles from the station. Date of leaving college, [blank] Date of return to college, 6:30 Thursday P. M. She petitions the Faculty to remit the penalty. Penalty remitted S. E. Smith. Sec'y of Faculty." Now of course I am curious as to what the penalty would have been!
