The Emeline Cogswell Letters

[letter]

History

The bulk of the letters in my collection related to Emeline ("Emma") Cogswell are from her daughter Abby Turner 1896:

The rest are from professors at the Seminary and College, and her family. Emma's nieces Mittie and Jessee are daughters of her sister Mary Abigail, and Charles Henry Wellman is Mary Abigail's son. Mary Abigail's husband had been married before he married Mary Abigail, and the three children from this first marriage were Mina Besse Wellman, Samuel Thomas Wellman, and Holley Garfield Wellman. Samuel Thomas married Julia Almina Ballard. Julia's mother was probably the "Grandma Ballard" that appears in several of the letters.

There's also one letter in this collection that was addressed to Emeline's husband, from his brother; and several letters from cousins to Abby Turner after Emma's death in 1921.
